Allow us to introduce ourselves. It would be just too pitiful to get killed by someone you don't even know the name of, you see? Starting with me, my name is Zadkiel
― Zadkiel before battle.

Zadkiel (サディケル, Sadikeru?), known as Ruprecht in the original English translation, is one of the Ten Wise Men, one of the data gatherers of the group, the fifth Wise Man to be created and a major antagonist in Star Ocean: The Second Story, its enhanced port Second Evolution and remake The Second Story R.

Story[]

Spoilers, plot and/or ending details follow. (skip)

Zadkiel first appears atop Eluria Tower with the other Wise Men, moments before the clash of Expel with Energy Nede, and their teleportation. Along with Camael, he has the task of gathering any information that is relevant to the group. The information is then processed/translated by Raphael. It was through these three that Lantis found out about the death of his daughter and went insane, which resulted in the events of the game.

He is then only seen again in Phynal, along with Raphael and Camael, where they all fight Claude, Rena and their friends, ending up defeated in the end.

Spoilers end here.

Battle[]

Zadkiel is fought in the second invasion of Phynal, alongside Camael and Raphael. He has the highest HP (100,000+) and MP (400) of the three and can teleport all over the field like Raphael, making him a serious threat. His tornado-like attack from his tuning fork can hit several times, instantly stunning or killing party members who are caught off guard. He frequently casts Mind Absorber throughout the battle to rob party members of their MP; he can also cast support spells such as Protection, Haste, and Bless, which he always uses to target Raphael.

Gameplay[]

In the remake, Zadkiel can be summoned as an Assault character. His Perfect Support grants a boost to DEF and Spell Damage Reduction to the party that is useful for fights where there can be too much magic involved such as some of the Wise Men, and some enemies in the Maze of Tribulations. Since it is a non-damaging Assault Ability, it can save your party against spells even in harder difficulties.

Trivia[]

  • If Camael or Raphael is defeated before Zadkiel, Zadkiel attacks less and becomes idle.
  • In the English translation of the PSX version, his name is changed to Ruprecht. This likely comes from Knecht Ruprecht, a companion of Saint Nicholas in German folklore.
