The Xbox 360 (stylized XBOX 360 and commonly abbreviated X360 or 360) is a seventh-generation multimedia entertainment console from Microsoft. Initially revealed in Summer 2005 on MTV. then demonstrated at E3 2005 and released November 2005, it is the company's second console after the original Xbox, and competed directly with Sony's PlayStation 3 at the height of the HD format war.
Description[]
Based on a modified version of Windows CE, the Xbox 360 was the first game console to fully incorporate wireless controllers out-of-the-box. It was also the first console to have a near-simultaneous worldwide release. Though based on standard DVD media, the Xbox 360 was capable of HD graphics as well as multi-channel audio and integrated network connectivity. The console gained high acclaim for its robust multiplayer experience as well, but was equally notorious for an abnormally high rate of failure in several early revisions.
Numerous configuration options were available in the Xbox 360's ten years on the market, including two "slim" models with integrated hard disk drives versus the original revision's modular storage. All models were discontinued as of April 2016.
Microsoft's Xbox Live service was greatly expanded to offer movies and music as well as games. Though Live is free-to-join, some games and features require a paid Gold subscription. As of Fall 2019, most services remain available.
