Rena Lanford is a playable character in Star Ocean: The Second Story, its remake Star Ocean: Second Evolution, the sequel Star Ocean: Blue Sphere, as well as Star Ocean: Anamnesis.

The Second Story / Second Evolution[]

Proficient in symbology (or heraldry in The Second Story), her symbols are Major Healing, Major Supportive and Mid-Destructive. Rena is primarily a healer, and the strongest in the game. She also equips knuckles for a small offensive ability early on, but this ability isn't developed through the story; however, many of her weapons grant her bonuses in magic. She is the only character in the game that can cast reviving spells.

Out of the four playable symbologists, she is the best "fighter" among them due to her quick punches that can be used to stun the enemy to some degree. Rena also has the highest defensive stats of all mages.

The Second Story R[]

Nearly all offensive spells have been reworked, and a lot of them now have multiple hits to make up for casting time. Most spells no longer pause gameplay and fighters can combo their abilities with symbologists to deal devastating damage. For example, Rena's Laser Beams and Light Cross now cover less range, but can stagger enemies due to their multi-hit properties. Crush and Gravity Crush deal surprisingly high Shield Damage, which can make Rena a decent Breaker.

Rena's melee attack is now slightly faster and more reliable, maintaining her decent physical damage in the early game. Assault Actions let Rena contribute greatly even when not in the active party. Most notably she can perform healing or even resurrection on-demand, or supply the very powerful Angel Feather or Reflection buffs.

Rena's new ultimate weapon, the Love Force (acquired from a post-game arena Group Battle), has less physical power than most of her weapons, but much greater INT. It also adds 200 DEF, and doubles the trigger rate for Interrupt and Concentration to help keep her safe when casting.

Rena[]

Rena is a non-standard healer who uses knuckles, which allows for short casting and very fast recovery motions. She can also temporarily strengthen both offensive and defensive parameters to the entire party, stacking with passive talent buffs. She can be hard to kill, and has good synergy with melee party compositions. However, she does low damage and has a slow Rush gain. Furthermore, Radiant Lancer's damage and gauge gain are backloaded onto the final hit, which is terrible for specially mobile bosses.
