Story[]
Background[]
When she was very young, the Devil's Plague killed her parents. She was thus taken in by her grandfather, Bran Kleiman, who was in charge of Lab III at Levarance's medical research facility and was a big contributor to the development of pulse towers. Dr. Kleiman often told Verda that "if his work could stem the flow of tears in the galaxy by even 1 ml, he would consider his job done". He was like a father to Verda, while his right-hand man and assistant Eldram, was her 'mother' figure.
Circa S.D. 536, her grandfather conducted some research on a desert planet and was the first to notice the towers' harmful effects, up until then assumed to be safe. Dr. Kleiman sent Verda and Eldram a message in which he said he would press for Operation: Frost to be repealed. As soon as Eldram heard the message he took off after Dr. Kleiman, claiming he needed to stop him from doing something reckless.
The next day Verda received news of her grandfather's death and Eldram's rise to power. Since then, Verda has been set on accomplishing her grandfather's mission of ending the Purge by finding a cure. She shut everyone out and avoided meaningful connections with other people.
Episode 1[]
In S.D. 539, when the GFSS-3214F is about to land on the space station, Verda intercepts its call and decides to meet the crew, aware of their reputation. She greets the captain, Evelysse and Coro by playing a prank, pointing her toy gun at them. Verda informs them that the laboratories are suspected to have been contaminated by the plague and will soon be supercooled. She requests their help as their goals are the same: she wants to find a cure, thus making Levarance's mining operation irrelevant. The captain agrees to the alliance, and Verda says she needs to steal the researchers' data before the base is supercooled.
They make it to the data room when thornites appear; they target Evelysse but the captain protects her, and ends up falling into a medicine cabinet. Apparently fine, they return to the ship to have a look at the data. It is locked, which Verda suspects is Eldram's work. After obtaining the passcode at her grandfather's laboratory, she reveals her connection to Eldram, but vows to end his tyranny. When Coro confirms they have unlocked the data, the party is about to depart when the captain collapses. Verda realizes they have been infected, but the party is unable to reach the medicine in time. Verda apologizes as the captain must be supercooled along with the base. She promises to find the cure and come back, but Evelysse refuses to leave, instead using her symbology to cure him. Seeing this miracle, Verda asks the captain to accompany her to Levarance, where she believes they can create a vaccine with his antibodies.
On Levarance, they liberate the works zone from thornites with Terry, Kurt and Val's help. Verda starts the vaccine's creation with the other researchers there, but Eldram and his troops soon arrive. Eldram requests to have talks with the captain and Verda. Eldram demands that they hand over the data and vaccine, and orders his guards to take Eve and the captain. Verda demands to know what he is thinking, but Eldram shoots the captain. However, Verda jumps in front and is wounded; Eve and the captain then rush to get her medical attention.
In spite of her condition, Verda—escorted by Terry—tails Evelysse and the captain when they confront Eldram again while he is without his Purge troops, and hears Eldram's reluctant explanation of the day he became supreme leader. When Dr. Kleiman teleports to their place, Verda tries to reason with him but he attacks her. Eldram shields Verda and, injured, manages to fatally wound Dr. Kleiman. As Kleiman dies, he regains his senses and thanks Verda. Ultimately, they both pass away as Verda cries.
In the aftermath, the vaccine is finally created, soon to be mass-produced. A provisional government is installed and makes plans to end Operation: Frost, retrieve the supercooled populatons, and restore the planet. As the GFSS-3214F is about to resume its journey back to Earth, Verda decides to join the crew and asks if they would consider her family. A few days after leaving Levarance, they help Terry, Kurt and Val to deactivate a pulse tower on Viret before resuming the journey to Earth.
Twin Eclipse[]
Verda cautions about a defended sector when Coro receives a distress signal from a Galactic Federation ship. They track the signal but, rather than a ship, they find a escape pod with Tika Blunche inside. She is accompanied by its AI, dubbed Recoro by Coro.
Profile[]
Since her grandfather's death and Eldram's departure, Verda shut everyone out, deliberately avoiding anything more than a superficial relationship with anyone. Verda opens up as she interacts with the captain, Evelysse and Coro, who go to great lengths to help other people (something she values and was instilled to do by her grandfather). She even asks to be part of their family, considering Eve her "big sis" and the captain "big bro", and jokingly mocking Coro as "the pet".
While Verda is quite disorganized and dresses cutely, she often acts like an adult, being quite mature and level-headed for her young age. When she first met the captain, Evelysse and Coro, she calls them "youngings" and "young whippersnappers" while calling herself an "old coot", and denies being just a child. She is confident in her abilities, and also quite curious.
Gameplay[]
Verda was a playable character, and counted with six different variants: "Verda", "Sweet Verda", "Hero Verda", "Idol Verda", "Rondo Verda", and "Summer Verda". Her standard variant, released alongside Precis, uses guns and has a non-standard enemy debuff.
