Vanguardians are a race of humanoids native to the Vanguard system. Significant populations exist on the underdeveloped planet of Vanguard III, explored by Fayt Leingod in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

Like the Nedians of earlier periods, Vanguardians are noted for their distinct outer ear shape, which extends from the head and curves downward. Due to Vanguard III's low gravity, Vanguardians are portrayed as being much weaker than Earthlings, owing to low muscle mass. Nonetheless, Vanguardian society revolves around farming and trade, which in turn enable Vanguardians to survive harsh seasonal changes. Most Vanguardians speak a language that can be processed through Pangalactic Federation communicators, as when Fayt must sacrifice his device as an explosive, the young Niklas is unintelligible.
