Val (ヴァル, Varu?) is a supporting character from Star Ocean: Anamnesis. He is a low-ranking citizen of Levarance, as well as best friends with Terry and Kurt.
Story[]
In S.D. 537, Val met Terry and Ralph in Residential Sector 8 during a Devil's Plague evacuation. Due to a power grid failure, several transport lifts broke down and many people got stranded, including them. Thanks to Ralph's leadership, they were able to get on a shuttle; however, Ralph had been infected and refused to board the transport. He made Val promise to take care of Kurt, who was already on the shuttle.
Afterwards, he found Kurt, whom he and Terry befriended, and became inseparable ever since. As low-ranking citizens, they were all sent to work to Dvaleor's mining operation.
In S.D. 539, Val meets the captain and Evelysse when thornites attack, but he hides during the whole fight. Evelysse is quick to point that he just cowered behind a boulder, but Val says that what matters is that they help each other—his help being support from afar. Terry and Kurt then return, and Terry tells Val they are the tower vandals. However, Val says they are friends due to fighting 'together' and accepts to answer Evelysse's questions.
Yet there isn't much they know. So, Val suggests that they use a device at a warehouse that could have answers. Terry, Val and Kurt learn there that Operation: Frost caused the destruction of several planets. Val is particularly upset and wonders how they can undo all the wrong, and Evelysse suggests that they fight alongside them against Eldram's tyranny.
However, Terry thinks how that will affect their friends and family. The party understands and thus thanks the trio for what they have done until then. They go their separate ways but the three friends tell the other citizens about the neighboring planets. They all quickly band together to rebel. Terry and Val then rescue Evelysse and the captain from Eldram and his forces, and help them return to their ship. The GFSS-3214F then departs for Levarance's medical research facility.
Val, Terry and Kurt are soon captured and taken to Levarance to be used as a bargaining chip against the party. After landing, however, a battalion of thronites attack and the trio escapes in the ensuing chaos. They then run into Evelysse, the captain and Verda Kleiman, and help them liberate the works zone from the thornite infestation. While the vaccine is made, the trio keeps guard until Eldram's Purge troops arrive. They help defend the laboratory while Evelysse and the captain confront Eldram, who is currently unguarded. The armed conflict ends with Eldram's death in an incident involving Verda and a mysterious monster .
In the aftermath, the vaccine is finally created and a provisional government is installed, and the GFSS-3214F departs. For their part, Terry and Val help in the restoration efforts by taking down the pulse towers. However, they become trapped in Viret's tower, which has toxic gas as a defense mechanism. They discover the 'safety zones' and survive long enough for the GFSS-3214F crew (who arrives thanks to Kurt's call for help) to find them. But when Val hears that Kurt has gone on his own to deactivate the tower, he recklessly tries to find him due to his promise to Ralph. Fortunately he listens to reason and, with everyone's help, he finds Kurt.
They manage to deactivate the tower and, after receiving medical help, the GFSS-3214F once again leaves. Val, Terry and Kurt remain behind, working to build a new Levarance "where everyone's happy".
