Arena

Edge Maverick battling at the Tatroi Colosseum.

The Arena (闘技場, Tōgijō?), also known as the Colosseum, is the battle station for tournaments held in Tatroi. It is the main means of entertainment to the population of Tatroi, being crowded with audience everyday. Its jurisdiction is exterior to the Kingdom of Astral, as the Arena was created and initially run by a wealthy merchant.

In Star Ocean, its remake Star Ocean: First Departure, and Star Ocean: The Last Hope, the Arena houses a sidequest. The player can enter its tournaments in order to earn rewards.

SO4 - Tatroi Colosseum

In S.D. 10, off-worlder Edge Maverick is reluctant about interfering with Roak's history and is fearful of showing his techniques unknown to the Roakians. However, he enters the tournament in order to defeat the Black Eagle and recover the Stone Sickness remedy he stole from Astral Castle, as Edge hopes to cure his friend Reimi. After defeating the thief, Edge is applauded as a hero by all of Astral, much to his dislike.

In S.D. 46, Roddick Farrence tries his luck at the Tatroi Arena upon visiting the city alongside Ilia Silvestri. His performance on the Arena calls the attention of retired Arena champion and veteran of the Demonic Wars, Ashlay Bernbeldt. Hoping for Roddick to be a deserving pupil, he offers to follow the youth on his travels. After obtaining the Van Emblem, Roddick's prowess incites T'nique Arcana to challenge him on a duel. When defeated, T'nique decides to join the party in order to become stronger and to achieve a finer control over his lycanthropy.

Star Ocean/Star Ocean: First Departure[]

Characters may sign up with the guards at the desk for a tournament. A tournament has several ranks, and a character must defeat all monsters in a rank to become that rank's champion and win a prize set. The next time they sign up to fight, the character fights in the next-higher rank: everyone starts at H Rank and they fight their way up to A Rank. Notably, players can recruit T'nique after acquiring the Van Emblem, and certain party members can learn the Omega SFT skill.

Only one character can enter at a time using only the equipment he or she carries and the items provided by the arena. The items provided vary according to the selected character's playstyle—i.e. whether they use special arts (Roddick, Ilia, Cyuss, Ashlay, Phia, Pericci, T'nique, Welch) or symbology (Millie, Ronyx, Ioshua, Erys)—, as do the prize rewards they earn should they win. Being KO'd or becoming immobile, via paralysis or petrification, results in a loss.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope[]

The Colosseum is first visited briefly during the hunt for Black Eagle, but outside of that quest it is still closed. Only upon completing the quests "Where's the Receptionist?" and "Sore Throat Soother" is full access to the Colosseum gained. An optional undertaking, the player can defeat enemies in the Arena or compete in Bunny Racing.

Arena

The arena pits the party against competitors in three different match types: Solo Mode (シングルバトル?), Team Mode (チームバトル?), and Survival Mode (ダブルアップバトル?). For every battle won, Fight Coins are awarded; they can be used at the colosseum's Fight Coin Exchange, run by Makafy. Players cannot use their own items; they have to use one of three set types provided by the arena.

Both the Solo and Team modes are initiated by selecting a competitor from a ranking board of 100 enemies. The player can challenge fighters up to three ranks ahead of them. The exception to this rule is the #1 ranked fighter or team, who cannot be challenged initially. An invisible point system is used to tally one's progress through both modes, and points go up after each victory. To fight the last match in each mode, the player must earn 299 colosseum points. Ranking at first place earns either the Solo or Team Champion Medal. In Solo Mode, a party member used solidifies his/her spot in the ranking, which means they can become a potential challenger for another character climbing the ranks.

Survival Mode is a team-based endurance test against ten back-to-back matches, as well as the best method for earning Fight Coins. The enemies in these matches are randomly chosen from the Team Mode ranking list. The prize money doubles with every victory, but losing a battle ends the challenge without any reward. The player can end their romp through Survival by selecting to quit inbetween bouts, which allows one to walk away with the Fol earned. Completing every Survival match gives 512 Fight Coins.

Trivia[]

  • In The Last Hope, beating the Survival Mode twice will replace the pool of ten teams with higher ranked teams. By opting to fight only nine teams and forfeit the tenth match, at a cost of half the speed of earning Fight Coins (256 coins instead of 512), the player can keep fighting the same ten teams repeatedly. Using this "trick" has its limits, however, as the teams will eventually be upgraded (most likely triggered either by the number of Colosseum matches won, or by the number of Fight Coins earned).
