The following is a list of symbology or heraldry in Star Ocean: The Second Story and its remake Star Ocean: Second Evolution. It is primarily used by four symbologists in the party: Rena Lanford, Celine Jules, Leon D.S. Gehste, and Noel Chandler. Healing magic is only available to the Nedians Rena and Noel.
Gameplay[]
In Star Ocean: The Second Story, there are ten elements present: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Thunder, Light, Darkness, Star, Vacuum and Void. All damaging spells fall under one of these elements, and like the original installment, most of the elemental spells are presented in two or three tiers. Certain spells can be combined.
Because of the nature of Star Ocean: Second Evolution and its shared engine with Star Ocean: First Departure, all elements that were not in the first Star Ocean have been removed (Star, Void, Vacuum), as well as several spells deemed redundant. Many spells have new localized names, and the spells that belonged to removed elements have been reallocated to the other remaining elements, disrupting a few of the tiers. Spell combining is also no longer available.
Sonic Saber, Forget, Reflection, and Earthquake were removed. Anti was renamed to Reflection and repurposed as the only magical defense spell. Earthquake was replaced by Stone Rain, a spell that originally debuted in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

- In Star Ocean EX, Celine uses Fire Bolt and Thunder Bolt frequently in battles. While under the control of a monster in Sacred Grounds of Linga, Celine uses Energy Arrow to attack Ashton; she uses Explosion at the Lacuer Front Lines, and Ray while battling Gargoyle and Demon Bird Jean. Leon casts Extinction to annihilate the party's opponents in the battle outside of Eluria Tower in the final episode.
