The following is a list of all symbols in Star Ocean and its remake Star Ocean: First Departure. They can be learned by Millie Chliette, Ronyx J. Kenny, Ioshua Jerand, and Erys Jerand (who is exclusive to the First Departure version).
Version differences[]
There were a number of changes for the First Departure remake:
- MP costs were adjusted.
- The Lightning element was removed, so the spells affected were given a Wind attribute.
- In Star Ocean, Tractor Beam can either have a mixed attribute of Lightning/Earth or have no attribute when targeting multiple enemies; in First Departure, it was changed into simply being of the Earth element. Crush and Gravity Crush, which were elementless, were changed to be Earth-elemental as well.
- Earthquake, Word of Death were removed.
- Reflection, Magnum Tornado, Deep Freeze, Fohn Wind, Shadow Flare, Black Saber, Thunder Cloud, Stone Rain, Noah, Star Light, Lunar Light, Southern Cross, Demon's Gate were added.
- Faerie Light (フェアリート?) and Fix Cloud (フィックスクラウド?)'s spellings were changed.
- Dispel (ディスペル?) was renamed Condition Cure (キュアコンディション?), while Blizzard (ブリザード?) was renamed Deep Freeze (ディープフリーズ?).

- In Star Ocean, Wind Blade was the only spell that was Wind-elemental.
- The symbols Deep Mist, Heal, Antidote, Silence, Acid Rain, Dispel, Haste, Delay, Raise Dead, Ice Needles, Glaive, Eruption, Tractor Beam, Laser Beams, Explode, and Meteor Swarm originated in Tales of Phantasia, which the team for Star Ocean previously had worked on. Additionally, Fix Cloud resembles Pow Pow Hammer.
