Spell Combination (干渉, Kanshō?, lit. Interference) is a unique feature of Heraldry in Star Ocean: The Second Story. It is a rare but powerful occurence in which two spells combine during combat.
Overview[]
Only a handful of spells that pause battle can combine, and only if they both activate at the same instance. It is possible for spells cast by two party members, two enemies, or a party member and an enemy to combine. When spells combine, it will create one of three results: Absorption, Cancellation, or Reflection. Absorption results in one spell "absorbing" the other, doubling in power. Cancellation will make both spells fail, and neither side will take damage. Reflection causes the spells to bounce off of each other, damaging both spell casters of opposing forces.
The most noticeable advantage in spell absorption is the spell effect itself, which can be either barely noticeable or can fit in perfectly. In some cases, a combination can have much greater effects than just casting the two spells separately. However, since the maximum damage amount for a single spell is 9999, sometimes the spells can end up doing more damage if they are cast separately. There seems to be a small chance that combination will fail, only doing the damage of the stronger spell as if it was cast normally.
To combine spells efficiently, the player should turn off Motormouth, since it randomizes the process, and put their casters on manual control.

Absorption[]
To achieve Absorption and combine spells, they must: either have the same element, or have compatible elements. In combinations between two same spells, the combo does not change the animation and the spell simply does double damage.
Note: Immediate means selecting either spell first; when the cursor is pointing at an enemy, the player should press and in quick succession, then cast the other spell. Otherwise it is cast the first spell, wait «» second(s), then cast the other.

- The feature is mentioned in the book Heraldry Arts System 1, found in Elder's House in Marze. It says that "attack spells cast by allies will induce fusion the instant that they touch each other, resulting in much greater energy which attacks the enemy".
