Deputy Director Shimada (シマダ, Shimada?) is a supporting character from Star Ocean: The Last Hope. As the deputy director for the Greater United Nations, he oversees the Universal Science and Technology Administration and its secret project, the Space Reconnaissance Force.

Story[]
Throughout the story Shimada is mainly seen on the screen of a ship giving orders to the SRF members, and the rest of the party, or at the Moonbase. He is first seen at the beginning of the game near when the SRF-003 Calnus crashes on Aeos. He first directs Grafton to follow his orders instead of using his own instincts. Here, it is revealed that he knew about the creatures on Aeos, but decided to let the SRF members deal with them, seeing them as expendable. His response to Grafton almost causes Edge, a crewmember of the Calnus, to lash out at him before being stopped by Reimi. However, he then says that because he does not want his reputation to be ruined for being a "cold-hearted superior whose all talk," he had already contacted "them" to aid the SRF members.
Later on in the game, when the surviving Eldarians accuse Earth of destroying Eldar, Shimada decides to erase the SRF in order to maintain his standing. He also orders Commander Kenny, who is against his decision to dismantle the SRF, to destroy the remaining SRF ships. His actions at this point show that he only cares about his own future and does not care if the Earth blows up. He even goes as far to say that the SRF was a joke. However, Commander Kenny decides to disobey his orders and allows the Calnus, at the time captained by Edge, to go on its way.
His last appearance is during the invasion of Nox Obscurus. While Commander Kenny and the Eldarians are fighting the phantom ships, he and his men stayed behind at the moonbase. At this time, his men, who have always agreed with him, have begun to doubt him, worried that they will be attacked by Nox Obscurus and that they probably should have left with the others. Shimada rebukes them, saying to leave the fighting to Commander Kenny. However, much to his men's fear, he, his men, and the moonbase are annihilated by one of Nox Obscurus' attacks.

Shimada is an obese, large man with a bald head and a goatee. He is very arrogant and abuses his power when giving orders to characters such as Grafton and Stephen D. Kenny, and is extremely dishonest, as he attributes himself with the accomplishments of the latter. Known for being an arrogant and high-handed man, he feels a great love for steak.
