Story[]
Background[]
Ronyx was born on Earth and graduated from the Pangalactic Federation's Academy. He is a descendant from Stephen D. Kenny, the first human to break the speed of light and arguably one of the most influential people in space exploration.
At some point, Ronyx got married but his marriage did not last long as his wife died of an illness. Pledged himself to singlehood, he wouldn't consider a new relationship of the sort until he met science officer Ilia Silvestri. When he was named Captain of the starship Calnus, Ilia became his second-in-command.
War against Lezonia[]
During the war against Lezonia in S.D. 346, the Calnus is deployed to Roak, an underdeveloped planet where the stone sickness pandemic threatens to consume its inhabitants. Due to the UP3, they oversee the incident until a trio of young Fellpools go to Mt. Metorx in order to recover a legendary herb said to cure any ailment. Ronyx and Ilia transport before Millie Chliette, Roddick Farrence and Dorne Murtough and, seeing Dorne's state, invite them to their ship, hoping to find a cure for the plague. They bring the three onto the Calnus, where they treat Dorne and tell them that the plague a bio-weapon created by the Lezonians; however, they don't know why they targeted Roak. They soon learn that Fellpool blood can block out the visible light spectrum of the human eye and that Lezonia used their blood to process a special, invisible material to be used in the war.
When Dorne is about to succumb to the disease, Ronyx grants his request and sends him home. During a meeting with a Lezonian ambassador, Ronyx, Ilia, Roddick and Millie learn the Lezonians were forced into war by a third party—Fargett—and that the virus' host is none other than Demon King Asmodeus, who died 300 years ago. The Federation thus cannot help the Roakians. However, Ronyx tells Roddick and Millie they can use the Time Gate on Styx to travel to the past. Ronyx is the first to enter the gate, landing somewhere near Van or Autanim with Millie in S.D. 46, while Ilia and Roddick end up in Kratus.
Due to leaving his weapon behind, he resorts to using bows. Though he is shy to admit how Millie taught him symbology, it is simply believed that she had to give him the symbology tattoo, and being a man of the military, was reluctant to show. At some point, he wished that symbology was on Earth so that his late wife could be cured, but realizes that that would be impossible.
He and Millie eventually encounter Mavelle Froesson, and travel with her. Ronyx always tries to talk her out of revenge, and even follow her to ensure her safety. Their close friendship often makes Ilia very jealous. After all of the party members defeat Asmodeus, he learns of Jie Revorse's possible plots, so he and Ilia round the group back up again. If the player activated enough Private Actions, a hidden ending will play out between him and Ilia, proposing to her.
Interlude[]
After their marriage, Ilia took on the surname Kenny. Together they had a son, Claude. When Claude was a child, Ronyx bought a dog with a big fluffy tail which reminded Ronyx of his old friend Roddick. Ronyx christened the dog after his former adventuring companion and his belief that Fellpool tails were like monkey's. The dog died after being hit by a car on Earth. However, he often made Claude uncomfortable as a child, believing that he must follow Ronyx's footsteps in life.
Crisis on Expel[]
I've turned my back on a billion people... and my own son.
― Ronyx blames himself after Expel's destruction
Ronyx, now an Admiral of the Pangalactic Federation, is briefly seen at the start of game, in Claude's tale. He spends much of the story searching for Claude across the galaxy after being separated, until the Calnus detects Claude's distress signal and approaches the planet Expel. Later, Gabriel shows off his power by destroying the Calnus with an antimatter cannon, and Ronyx, along with his entire crew, is killed.
Profile[]
Ronyx is a dark haired young man in Star Ocean, while in the second installment he is older and sports a beard. His outfit also changes in The Second Story to reflect his Admiral post. Personality-wise, Ronyx has a serious demeanor and a great sense of justice, willing to break federation law and risk a court martial if it means saving the Roakians. However, he isn't very good at encouraging others, often leaving the task in Ilia's hands.
Although presumably acquainted with other species as Federation captain, Ronyx is extremely curious about the texture of Fellpool tails, even making a comment that he'd like to touch Roddick's tail. His favourite food is boiled mushrooms.
Gameplay[]
Ronyx J. Kenny is a playable character in Star Ocean and its remake Star Ocean: First Departure, being one of the four permanent party members. He is a long-range fighter who equips bows and uses symbology to damage his enemies. However, his weapons do not provide bonuses to his MAG stat, much to his detriment.
Ronyx also makes a playable appearance in Star Ocean: Anamnesis, as a 5-7☆ Invoker who uses bows.
