Purgatorium - WM1

The entrance to the Purgatorium on the world map.

The Purgatorium, also known as Parj Temple, is a sanctuary in the Astralian Continent in Roak. It was built by the Muah, and was also called by them as the "Temple of Purity", many years ago and in the present day, it is said to house the Eye of Truth, an artifact that allows one to see what he wants to see.

It is located in a deserted plateau, far from any demographic spots. For this reason, not much is known about it.

Story[]

Star Ocean: The Last Hope[]

Purgatorium - WM2

The true entrance to the Purgatorium on the world map.

Edge's party finds themselves heading into the Purgatorium in pursuit of Sarah's kidnappers, the cult followers of Asmodeus. When they find themselves unable to go farther, Meracle suggests they seek help from Lady Eleyna on how to proceed. After doing so and acquiring the Lamp of Guidance, the party treks farther inside. Partway through the area, Faize discovers that the ritual has already begun and that the nomads they encountered earlier had already been sacrificed to Asmodeus.

The party quickly enters the innermost room of the Purgatorim and discovers Tamiel before he can begin the ritual. Tamiel goes into a spiel about human greed and desire, but Edge's crest activates and the party engages in battle, clobbering Tamiel and his followers. The party then rescues Sarah and leaves, but not before Faize discovers proof of the nomad's death, marking the start of his eventual turn to darkness.

Star Ocean/First Departure[]

Purgatorium - Sanctum

The party is aided by the Runes.

By leaving Astral City, Roddick and his friends are told by Phia that the Purgatorium may hold a relic that can help them finding their friends: the Eye of Truth. She also informs them that the main entrance is a facade and that the true entrance to the Purgatorium lies beyond it

Reaching the Purgatorium, the party remembers the true entrance to it is beyond the great gate, and they head into the mountains behind it, only to find a Featherfolk, Ioshua Jerand. He asks for their help, as he is too frail to push a rock that blocks the entrance to the temple, and joins the party after they succeed to push the block.

Inside the Purgatorium, the party walks through great halls and solves puzzles, and successfully reaches the great hall. Although they find no relic, the Runes suddenly appear before them. After the party explains their goals, the Runes agree to show them the location of Mille and Ronyx, on the condition that the intruders leave the Purgatorium at once, never to return.

Purgatorium Inner Sanctum

The Purgatorium's Inner Sanctum.

Later, after obtaining all the Emblems left by the Muah, Roddick and his friends return to the Purgatorium. At the great hall, the Runes appear again, and after hearing the party, they teleport it to the Purgatorium's Inner Sanctum. Unlike all the party has seen up to now, this area has a very technological appearance, with automatic doors, electric lights and machinery, which shows signs of a civilization much more advanced than anything seen on Roak. After roaming through this area, the party reaches a room where the Emblems it obtained are required in order for it to procced any further. After passing this trial, the party is granted access to the deepest chamber of the Purgatorium. There, an hologram of a Muah appears, and tells the story of its people, only to grant the real Eye of Truth to the party afterwards.

Dictionary Entry[]

The oldest existing temple on Roak, housing statues that are believed to be prepresentations of the Muah, a race quite unlike the planet's current inhabitants. The temple has numerous floors and extends deep underground; the further down you go, the more remnants of an ancient yet vastly superior scientific culture can be found.

Character Recruitment Changes[]

  • If you have recruited Phia Melle early (by heading to Astral without either Cyuss or Ashlay and breaking her out of jail), she requires you go to the Purgatorium, otherwise she leaves. After the events there, you must agree to take Ioshua Jerand along permanently if you want Phia to stay.
  • If you have recruited Ashlay Bernbeldt and chose to go to the Purgatorium following the events at Astral City, Ioshua will temporarily join the party a bit further into the Purgatorium. Recruiting Ioshua permanently with Ashlay is the only way to recruit Erys Jerand later on (in the Playstation Portable / First Departure R versions only).
  • In the Super Famicon version only, there was another way to recruit Ioshua later on when you visit the Purgatorium after getting all 4 emblems, but it required that you recruit Ashlay and chose not to visit the Purgatorium after Astral. You must also have had at least one open spot in the party.
  • If you have recruited Cyuss Warren and have chosen to head to the Purgatorium, Ioshua will temporarily join upon entering. Choosing to make Ioshua a permanent addition is the only way to have Cyuss and Mavelle Froesson in the same party, although you will not be able to recruit Erys with this lineup.

Trivia[]

  • The Purgatorium visited in The Last Hope is the fake one as shown by the identical appearances of the front buildings in both games.
