Phia Melle is a playable character in Star Ocean, its remake Star Ocean: First Departure, and the spin-off Star Ocean: Anamnesis.
Star Ocean[]
Phia's weapon of choice consist of daggers and short swords. Her movement speed is classified as fast (★★★☆). She can also equip leather armor, heavy armor and shields. One of her accessory slots is permanently filled with the Astral Ring, which is described as being "needed to use the Raven Sword fighting style". The ring provides a +10 STM bonus, but otherwise offers no benefit and prevents her from combining the effects of other accessories.
In the SNES version, Phia throws her daggers as a boomerang-like weapon when performing normal attacks. These projectiles travel through tightly clustered enemies and damage them individually, and can strike them all a second time on the return trip. The potential number of hits Phia can achieve per throw made her one of the best close-range fighters, without having to use a single technique.
Her normal attack in First Departure is changed to a standard melee-range swing, significantly reducing its damage potential and making her a short-range fighter. Despite this, she is still restricted to wearing her Astral Ring accessory at all times.
- Recruitment
There are two conditions in order to recruit Phia. One happens early in the game while the other happens in the mid-section. She cannot obtain her Gods of War SFT if she is recruited via Option 1. When recruiting her via Option 2, it is already learned.
In option 1, if neither Cyuss or Ashlay were recruited, in Astral City after resting at the inn, the player must head to the jail within the castle to find Phia. There, she will ask if she can help with something. The player must select the options "I want to know the truth," "If I could...", and "Take her with you". After doing the subsequent Astral Caves dungeon, the player needs to select two more options in order to keep her around: "Well, let's hear her out," and "To the Purgatorium!"
In option 2, if the player did recruit Cyuss or Ashlay and has six or less party members, Phia can be recruited during the emblem quest's main plot by choosing "Could you lend us a hand?".
