Maere (メーア, Mēa?) is a planet that appears in Star Ocean: Anamnesis, being the first one the GFSS-3214F visits during the game's main scenario.
Its true name is unknown, as Coro (the ship's AI and navigator) has no data on its star system and randomly assigned the name "Maere" to the planet. What is true is that it is about 70,000 light-years away from Earth, well outside Pangalactic Federation territory.
Characteristics[]
Approximately 40 percent of its surface is covered by land, and only 30 percent is not obstructed by canopy. There are no cities with populations exceeding 100,000, and internal combustion engines have yet to be invented as of SD 539.
Coro suspects its ocean is comprised of deionized water and a number of minerals. Large mining sites are located below the planet's surface; however, while the locals do not possess technology sufficient to excavate at such depths. Unbeknownst to them, another (spaceborn) race is exploiting the planet's resources, leaving the technologically-advanced pulse tower for their mining operation.
Story[]
The Captain, Evelysse and Coro arrive at Maere's orbit. Due to the damage the GFSS-3214F sustained before in a pirate attack, its shields are failing and space dust is damaging its hull. Though they will not find replacement parts for repairs on Maere, they descend on the planet to locate a source energy and, with it, erect a shield strong enough to repel the dust.
Upon landing, the ship's short-range sensors stop responding, despite the system being intact. Due to the sensors being needed to locate the materials they need, the Captain and Evelysse go outside to secure their landing area while Coro analyzes the systems. On their return, he tells that the planet is emitting some waves that interfere with the sensors. To stop it, they build a jammer to block out the waves and carry it as far as they can so that the sensors can see everything in-between the two points. Once the cause is located, they attach a counter-jammer to it. They also secure some salt water (which affords them drinkable water, oxygen and some natural salt for cooking).
After exploring the shore, Coro discovers a technologically-advanced building thanks to the counter-jammer. Suspecting it to be the cause of the interference, they go to the research facility to investigate and find Cryptic Data for Coro to analyze.
They also investigate the "Man-Eating Cave" (人喰いの洞, Hito Kui no Hora?). Local legends say that any who dares enter the cave is said to be swallowed whole, vanishing without a trace. While exploring the cave, Coro detects the cause of the jamming interference: it comes from equipment built by a highly advanced civilization and located on the other side of the cave. Heeding Coro's instructions, the Captain and Evelysse defeat its guardian, shut down the tower, and retrieve the energy unit powering the tower. Thanks to the unit, they power up the shields. Coro tells them of the reason behind the tower: another race from offworld is siphoning the planet's resources without the locals' consent. Angered at this, Eve asks the Captain to help her bring the criminals to justice, to which the Captain agrees. While Coro continues to analyze the data, they depart for the next planet, Esperance.
Gameplay[]
Players must clear the mission 1-23 "Man-Eating Cave Survey" in order to unlock Multiplayer mode; only then the player is able to access the Events button. Sphere 211, which replaced the Maze of Tribulations, is unlocked after completing all of Maere's scenario. Completing mission 1-30 earns the player the "Clear Chapter 1" title.
All battle missions have as their primary rewards the following items: the rare S. Limit Breaker, random Augmentation crystals (e.g. S. Red Crystal) and experience prisms (e.g. Red Prism Stone), enhancement hammers (e.g. Stone Hammer: Enhance), as well as random 1-2☆ weapons (e.g. Walloon Sword, Inferior Sword).
The following enemies appear: Killer Chellae, Gerel, Thornite Turtle, Horned Turtle, Valiant Conscript, Skeleton Soldier and Ancient Guard. The mission board is as follows:
