DON'T MOVE! STAY WHERE YOU ARE!
― Jophiel's first words at Eluria Tower
Jophiel (ジョフィエル, Jofieru?), known as Shigeo in the original English translation, is one of the Ten Wise Men, the long range weapon of the group, the second Wise Man to be created and a major antagonist in Star Ocean: The Second Story, its enhanced port Second Evolution and The Second Story R. He, along with Zaphkiel and Metatron, is also one of the weakest of the group and one of the lowest-ranking in their hierarchy.
Story[]
About four billion years ago, Jophiel was one of the first Wise Men developed by Dr. Lantis. Like the others, he was designed to quench the rebellion in non-Nedian populations who resisted Energy Nede's iron grip over the galaxy and to rule the universe on behalf of Nede.
However, when opposition to the Wise Men project led to the death of Lantis' daughter in a terrorist attack, Lantis reprogrammed Jophiel and the others to destroy the whole universe. When Lantis's plan stumbled and the oppositors cornered them in their lab, Lantis sealed Jophiel and the others in Eternity Space. There, the organization bid its time until they could carry out their plan once again.
Jophiel is first met at Eluria Tower, where he attacks Claude C. Kenny and Rena Lanford. He is the first to reveal himself to the group by ordering them to freeze. When Rena ignores his warning, he attacks her but Claude gets in the way and is wounded instead. Rena then uses her powers to heal him, revealing to the Wise Men her origin as a Nedian.
He is then only met in Energy Nede, in the Wise Men's attack to Fun City, along with Jophiel, Zaphkiel and Metatron. He is defeated by the party after they fight Zaphkiel.
Profile[]
Jophiel speaks in a robotic tone, and is sadistic and merciless in his purpose as a biological weapon.
Battle[]
Jophiel is fought in Fun City. He is an average Wise Man in terms of power, but he can fly around the battlefield at fast speeds making him hard to catch. His long-ranged move Energy Ray can petrify characters and may do from one to four hits. Due to his speed, it might be helpful to have a spellcaster help and stunlock him in place.

Trivia[]
- Given his android-like appearance, it is possible he was the first sage made or experimented on as the others have a more human/humanoid-like appearance.
- In the PSX version Jophiel knows Dark Sphere but the creators programmed him with 25 MP so it can never seen nor he attempts to use it. In the PSP remake, Jophiel knows no spells whatsoever but keeps his 25 MP.
- In the English translation of the PSX version, his name is changed to Shigeo. This likely comes from Shigeo Kamata, a Japanese Buddhist scholar.
