Item Creation (アイテムクリエーション, Aitemu Kuriēshon?), generally shortened to IC, is a recurring gameplay mechanic of the Star Ocean series, which allows the players to create and enhance a multitude of items. A variety of trades are offered per game.
Welch Vineyard, who first appeared in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, is deeply connected with the Item Creation mechanic throughout the series, generally being the one who enables the player to use the mechanic.
Item Creation is dependent on skills learned from Skill Guilds. Leveling the corresponding skills will improve a character's ability to create an item from the categories below or use a Specialty/Super Specialty in the field. A character's ability to succeed in creating items may also be influenced by their talents.
Possible creations by IC specialty:
Item Creation works exactly like in the first Star Ocean, in Star Ocean: The Second Story and Second Evolution. Skills must be learned at Skill Guilds and later leveled. A character's ability to succeed is again influenced by their Talents. Star Ocean: The Second Story’s introduced Super Specialties to the series, which, as forementioned, were added in the first Star Ocean's remake, First Departure.
Possible creations by IC specialty:
Item Creation must now be performed at Workshops scattered throughout towns and dungeons. Once a player invents an item, they can file for a patent, and get money from the profits made off selling those items in various shops. The player is also able to recruit Inventors to aid them in creating various items.
Possible creations by skill, along with its corresponding Inventors:
- Alchemy - Eliza, Mackwell, Misty Lear, Ansala
- Compounding - Gossam, Milenya, Puffy, Louise
- Cooking - Damda Mooda, Mayu, Rigel, Killer Chef
- Crafting - Stanice, Balbados, Aqua & Evia, Chilico
- Engineering - Dejison, Vanilla, Meryl, Izak
- Writing - Cornelius, Mishell, Count Noppen, Osman
Item Creation can only be performed inside the SRF-003 Calnus, where it is managed by Welch Vineyard. Common ingredients can be found in shops, while rarer and uncommon types can be found in combat fields. The feature has a failure rate and ingredients and supplies will be destroyed in the process. Creating 100% of all possible items earns the player the "World's Biggest Welch Fan" trophy.
In order to create items, recipes (レシピ, Reshipi?) are required. While there are thirty Recipe Memos that turn up in treasure chests or as rewards for side quests, for the most part the player needs to create them on their own. These recipes can be discovered by making combinations between up to three characters at the Item Creation room, through the new feature "Recipe Creation Conference".
Each playable character, with the exception of Sarah Jerand, is adept at a specific Item Creation ability, and is responsible for the progression of that skill. Additionally, every character has some aptitude for skills other that their own. By highlighting a character in the recipe invention screen, the player can see the character's scores for every Item Creation skill in the upper-right corner of the screen, as well as an eighth (and secondary) skill, "Sense".
The recipe invention process can be done in the "Invent new recipes" option, where one must arrange the party into a research group. By selecting "Start", the group begins brainstorming ideas (for every six seconds they spend forming ideas, one Party SP is spent). There are three factors that determine what recipes are successfully invented: the primary IC skill level (one will never come up with a level 7 recipe if the specialized character does not have its skill at level 7 or higher); the combination of selected characters, and their secondary IC skills. These last two factors are related as all recipes require a total IC skill/Sense score. An item's recipe that requires a total Smithery score of 15, will need Edge (whose Smithery score is 10) to be paired with two other characters who have a combined Smithery score of at least 5. The same rule applies to the Sense score.
Recipes by skill and its respective character:
Both Faize and Arumat are adept at Alchemy, but each have slightly separate possible recipes that they can create. It is advised that players fully explore Faize's recipe possibilities before Arumat joins the party. The aforementioned Sarah Jerand knows how to synthesize items so as to increase their attributes.
The player can make use of the Duplication skill to duplicate some of the rarest materials in order to save time. The ability allows to make a copy of any item at the cost of some Magical Clay, and can be found from a chest in the Cave of the Seven Stars bonus dungeon.
