Ioshua Jerand is a playable character in Star Ocean, its remake Star Ocean: First Departure, and Star Ocean: Anamnesis.

Star Ocean/Star Ocean: First Departure[]

Ioshua is proficient in attack symbology and possesses a small amount of healing spells, and uses rods as weapons. He can equip cloth armor. One of his accessory slots is permanently filled with the "Feather Ring". The ring provides a +5 DEF bonus, but otherwise offers no benefit and prevents him from combining the effects of other accessories. He is proficient in Water, Wind, Earth, and Light elemental symbols.

His movement speed is classified as slow (★☆☆☆).

In the First Departure version, his spell list was heavily modified, likely due to Erys' inclusion. Tractor Beam, Earthquake, Word of Death, Dark Sphere and Meteor Swarm were removed. Magnum Tornado, Fohn Wind, Thunder Cloud, Star Flare, Noah, Faerie Healing and Stone Rain were added.

Recruitment

To get Ioshua, the player must, after the adventures in Astral, immediately go to the Purgatorium when given the choice. (Ioshua will not join if the player does not go there at their first chance.) Once there, from the main entrance the player must go back to the world map and hug the mountain range to the right of Purgatorium, the one that leads to a dead end. It will eventually take the party to the Purgatorium's secret entrance. Ioshua will then request the party's help and joins to explore the place.

At the end of the quest, the player is given two choices after Ioshua says he is about to leave:

  • Ask him to join.
  • See him off.

If the first option is chosen, he will ask yet again, and Roddick must tell him he does want him to join. Ioshua will say something about feeling the strong convictions of Roddick and will thus join the party.

In First Departure, Ioshua, Ashlay and Mavelle are absolutely necessary in order to obtain Erys. However, Mavelle will be permanently removed at the Old Race Ruins regardless of whether Erys joins or not.
