You do realize that this is completely meaningless. Reisistance is futile! I think we'll need to teach you that no matter how much you worms wiggle, your still nothing, but worms in the end.
― Haniel before battling the party
Haniel (ハニエル, Hanieru?), known as Vesper in the original English translation, is one of the Ten Wise Men, the public controller of the group, the eighth Wise Man to be created and a major antagonist in Star Ocean: The Second Story, its enhanced port Second Evolution and remake The Second Story R.
Story[]
Haniel is first met in Eluria Tower along with the other Wise Men. He taunts the heroes before the clash of Energy Nede with Expel, and is only seen a second time at Phynal, where he fights the heroes alongside Michael.
Battle[]
Haniel is fought alongside Michael at Phynal. The battle against them is considered one of the hardest in the entire game. His main attacks consist of physical attacks that dish out major damage, the Tractor Beam spell which he uses on occasion, and an energy beam attack that has a chance of petrifying the victim. In spite of all this, Michael is still the greater threat and should be taken out first. His spells are Tractor Beam, Blood Scylla, Mental Drain, Antidote and Heal.

Trivia[]
- In the PlayStation Portable remake, Antidote was removed from his spell list very likely due to its uselessness, since the Ten Wise Men are immune to status conditions.
- In the English translation of the PSX version, his name is changed to Vesper. This likely comes from vespers, a service of evening prayer and one of the canonical hours in Eastern Orthodox, Coptic orthodox, Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic, Lutheran, and Anglican liturgies.
