The Game Boy Color (abbreviated GBC) was a handheld video gaming device manufactured by Nintendo, the last of four devices in the Game Boy line of handhelds that made their debut in 1989. The Game Boy Color itself was launched in the autumn of 1998. Its defining feature was an LCD display that could project up to 56 simultaneous colors from a 16-bit palette.
The GBC was backward-compatible with all earlier Game Boy games, but used variations in cartridge color and shape to distinguish Color-only games from dual-mode games and Game Boy originals.
Although somewhat popular with players, the Game Boy Color, and the entire original Game Boy line, ended production in 2003, when it was supplanted by the Game Boy Advance.
