Ye who seek power, come unto me. I shall embrace ye with unending despair and sorrow.
― Gabriel Celesta
Gabriel Celesta or Celeste (ガブリエ・セレスタ, Gaburie Seresuta?) is a recurring hidden superboss in the Star Ocean series and in several other tri-Ace games.
Gabriel is a powerful Celestial who presides over sin and judgment and is often one of the most powerful enemies in the games he appears, usually faced before the Ethereal Queen. He is associated to the "The Incarnation of Devil" battle theme. Depending on the game, he's either a male or female.
Appearances[]
Star Ocean[]
In the Star Ocean: First Departure remake, Gabriella can be summoned by playing the song "The Devil's Aria". The player must have a Silver Trumpet to compose it; a character with the Music at level 10 and both the Listening and Rhythm Sense talents should then play "The Devil's Aria" somewhere where random encounters are possible.
The Second Story[]
Appearing for the first time in the series, Gabriella can be fought in the last floor of the Maze of Tribulations. She drops the Silver Trumpet upon defeat, which allows a character with the Music specialty level 10 to play "The Devil's Aria" and summon Iselia Queen, Gabriella's counterpart.
Blue Sphere[]
Now as a male, Gabriel Celeste appears before the party at the end of the Cave of Trials after gathering nine rings scattered throughout the game. He drops the tenth ring, which allows the player to fight the Iseria Queen immediately after his defeat.
Till the End of Time[]
After clearing out all the bosses on the final floor of the Maze of Tribulations, Gabriel Celesta appears before the party, realizing that they possess great strength. Cliff says he gets an uneasy feeling from him, and Fayt agrees. The party then engage him in battle. Upon defeat, Gabriel congratulates the party and tells them the seal has now been broken, unlocking the passage to the last 111 floors of Sphere 211, allowing the player to face the Ethereal Queen. The player can refight Gabriel by returning to the bottom of the maze.
The Last Hope[]
Gabriel encounters the crew of the SRF-003 Calnus in the inner sanctuary of the Cave of the Seven Stars. Commenting on the usual absence of humans in the place, Gabriel then asks the party to fight him. Edge corrects Gabriel on their motives on fighting in general, stating that they aren't fighting for entertainment but rather for the future and the people in the world.
Defeating Gabriel Celeste unlocks the Wandering Dungeon on En II. He hands over one of his feathers each time he is defeated and grows more powerful when beaten, showing four, then six wings to indicate this.
Integrity and Faithlessness[]
Gabriel Celeste appears in the Maze of Tribulations bonus dungeon as a superboss. Much like in The Last Hope, he grows more powerful after each defeat, also increasing the number of his wings.
Anamnesis[]
Gabriel appears in the exclusive God level stage of the Cave of the Seven Stars event, and can only be challenged by spending seven fragments. He is at level 400 and the fight has two stages; the encounter will forcibly end after four minutes if the players have not been able to deplete his double health bar.

Trivia[]
- In Till the End of Time, Maria Traydor mentions that Gabriel has suffered four defeats (on Roak, Expel, Edifice and Asgard). While this was true at the time of the game's release, it is now incorrect as the posterior prequel entries in the series and Valkyrie Profile mean that Gabriel's defeats would be at a minimum of seven. Furthermore, the defeat on Expel was not technically the real Expel, but merely a memory recreation that the party experienced.
