Gabriel (ガブリエル, Gaburieru?), known as Indalecio in the Second Story English translation, is the final boss of Star Ocean: The Second Story and its remake Star Ocean: Second Evolution.

Battle skills[]

Being the leader of the Ten Wise Men, Gabriel is, unsurprisingly, the strongest of them all, with a large 500,000 HP and 10,000 MP. Gabriel's battle stance consists him of floating in mid-air holding a tome in his hand. He'll likely start off the battle by spamming his Divine Wave ability to catch physically attacking melee fighters offguard, and likely petrifying or killing them. He will often do this 3-4 times before going off for a regular attack or spell. He has a very high attack range and uses strong spells (see list below), and he is difficult to stunlock, as he moves around quickly. Unlike the other wise men, he is immune to being dazed and/or muted, making it even harder to stunlock him.

When Gabriel's HP get down to nearly half he'll use his "trick up his sleeve", "Time of Truth" in which he'll display his true nature. Gabriel is now accompanied by Philia. He is now stronger, he floats up slightly more and has a higher status with a more widespread of spells at his disposal. He moves faster and casts spells faster and this time, he's casting his spells while zipping around, making it extremely difficult to knock him out of it in time. One reliable trick the player can use is to consta-cast a simple quick-spell like Press by Rena or Grave by Noel to interrupt. Gabriel also has a new special art, "Divine Comedy" ("Song of the Gods" in its remake), which is a light elemental move that attacks the entire party. Causing very strong damage even with resistance, this move can still take a possible 9999 damage from the player and its party members, making it all up to luck and guts in order to survive it.

Unlimited Gabriel[]

If the player attends the right PAs in Central City, he can fight a stronger Gabriel known as 'Unlimited Gabriel'. In this confrontation, the player finds out who Gabriel really is. Gabriel kills Philia before battle, prompting that she betrayed him. He then attacks the heros after announcing that, after he's done with them, he will make this "trash heap of a universe disappear without a trace". In his unlimited form, Gabriel has an amazing 1,500,000 HP and 25,000 MP. He's a much stronger version of his second form, casting the same spells and moves, but with a much higher status. He is also much faster and casts spells even quicker then before. He can't be caught even with characters wearing bunny shoes, making it very hard to stunlock him.

Trivia[]

  • In the original japanese version, Philia can be seen crucified to a cross during the final blast of the Divine Comedy move. This is censored in European and US adaptations, as the developers feared their game being banned in western countries for depicting christian symbols and imitating the crucification of Jesus Christ.
  • Gabriel is almost famous for his opening phrase: „I-I'm coming!“ which he says right at the start of the battle.
  • He is also famous for his good-bye phrase: „Yes! Thank you for striking me! No needs to put the lights out, yet...“ which he utters when defeated.
  • After conjuring Philia, Gabriel can be heard speaking bivocally. In fact, Philia has her own voice and both voice actors are speaking synchronically.
  • It is debatable whether Ethereal Queen or Gabriel Unlimited is more difficult. Also, the player could choose to fight either one of them before the other.
