Ernest Raviede is a playable character in Star Ocean: The Second Story, Star Ocean: Second Evolution, its sequel Star Ocean: Blue Sphere, and Star Ocean: Anamnesis.
Star Ocean: The Second Story / Second Evolution[]
Ernest uses whips as weapons, allowing him to fight at virtually any range. His strongest whip, the Cat o' Ninetails, allows him to hit up to three times in a row, functioning similarly to the Slayer's Ring. All his stats are below average, with no notable pros. Ernest can use medium-weighted armor.
All his Special Arts have low proficiency and MP usage, meaning they can be upgraded fast. However, none of them make him truly stand as a character, being often slow, with low priority, and lack of multi-hits. Bed of Roses seemingly the only exception. Because of this, he is often considered the 'worst' character in the game.
To recruit Ernest, Opera must be in the party and the player must initiate certain Private Actions beforehand. Later on, if Ernest is turned down when he offers to join, Opera will leave with him. In order to have Opera join (but not Ernest), Opera's ship in the Sacred Forest should not be found. Also, in The Second Story, if Ernest is recruited and all other potential party members have been recruited by that point, the player has to choose between Leon D.S. Gehste/Dias Flac (depending on the chosen scenario), Chisato Madison, and Noel Chandler as their last recruit.
The Second Story R[]
Out of all characters in the remake, Ernest received the most changes. While his normal attacks are still underwhelming, being very slow but boasting high range, nearly all his Arts have greatly improved hitboxes, are much faster and have higher hit count. Thousand Tails in particular now is one of the most effective Shield-breaking Arts in the entire game, while Sonic Whip has a much larger projectile that travels through the entire screen. Bed of Roses continues to be his best Art, now with better tracking in addition to its global range, allowing Ernest to hit enemies no matter where he is.
Ernest's new ultimate weapon is the Glorious Thorn (acquired from a Raid Boss on Expel), which adds extra hits whenever he uses Special Arts, effectively casting Bed of Roses on top of whatever Art he performs. Additionally the thorns will switch targets automatically if the current target dies, making Ernest one of the best mob-clearing characters in the game. When upgraded into its Ferocity form, it offers a tremendous 70 CRT boost and always hits with its attacks, furthermore it reduces his MP costs by 25%.
