Story[]
Fayt and Cliff are introduced to Elena after arriving into Aquaria. She subsequently introduces them to Dion Landers, who they work together with on the Thunder Arrow. Fayt and Cliff find Elena a pleasant, if somewhat eccentric, woman, who is said to be adept at creating new ideas, but not terribly good at applying to them to practical use. It may be read on her shelves, however, that she has, in fact, applied runology to such mundane tasks as cooking, though in ways which seem far less-practical than doing the task without it.
Elena is very affected by Dion's death and spends most of her days immediately following his passing sleeping at her desk in the castle.
She is later shown during a sidequest to have harbored feelings for and previously dated Airyglyph XIII, King of Airyglyph, when he studied abroad at Castle Aquaria in his youth. During the peace negotiations after the war with Aquaria and Airyglyph, Airyglyph XIII asks Fayt to deliver a letter to Elena asking for her hand in marriage. Upon receiving his message, she tears it to pieces and appears annoyed that he has not come to visit her in person; although she does not appear to be angry, Elena is visibly frustrated with him, making clear that her old feelings are far from gone. In a later confrontation with Airygylph XIII, who Elena calls "Arzy" (a diminutive form of his personal name, Arzei) she declines his marriage proposal due to the actions that they both took during the war between Aquaria and Airygylph.
After Fayt and his group penetrate 4D Space, it is revealed that the Church of Apris arose as a religious "misinterpretation" of early interactions between inhabitants of the Ancient Kingdom of Aquor and Sphere employees working on Blair Lansfeld's "Project Apris" who entered the Eternal Sphere (including Elena, along with Palmira Armes, Eleanor Duran, Irisa Pahm, and Folstar Rood) and whose first names became associated with the Aprisian gods. It is unknown whether this religious misinterpretation was accidental (due to the Elicoorians misrepresenting Blair's employees as divine), or intended (due to Blair's employees openly declaring themselves gods). Elena's associated Goddess is Elena, the Goddess of Light and one of Apris' children. She is said to have wings of pure white growing out of her back, and spins songs with her wooden sword to inspire warriors. According to the Church of Apris, Elena gave the Sacred Tablet of the Ten Precepts, which records the 10 "commandments" as handed down by the gods, to one of the founders of the Kingdom of Aquaria, Ronaldo Dyne.
During Nel Zelpher's solo ending, Nel runs into Elena while exiting the Queen's audience chamber. Nel, who now suspects Elena may be a 4D Being, asks her why she tries so hard to better Aquaria. Elena responds that she likes "[Nel's] world" and asks if Nel has a problem with that.
In the 4D world, Elena remains a vegetable, but her spirit in the Eternal Sphere retains all prior knowledge and self awareness. Elena can further customize her appearance in the Eternal Sphere to her liking and cannot die from age or disease.[1]
Elena did not intend to use her advanced knowledge to invent or discover anything for the benefit of Aquaria, but because she inadvertently let slip "genius" theories and discoveries, she had no choice but to rise to the position of head researcher at Castle Aquaria. The development of the Thunder Arrow was not Elena's idea, but rather Dion and Mackwell's, but Elena did her part to mitigate the danger by adding safety features to the blueprints so that no one but her could fully understand its construction. Mackwell would later quit the Runological Weapon Development Division due to Elena's disorganized nature, likely her way of stalling development on the weapon for as long as possible.[2]
Trivia[]
- Elena declines Airyglyph XIII's marriage proposal on the pretext that they both committed atrocities against each other's nations during the war that cannot be forgiven. However, because Elena is a 4D Being, this was likely a cover for the real reason she could not spend the rest of her life with him, as she would never age or get sick around him.
- The game developers confirm Elena supplied Ruddle Crispin and Rumina G. Dogin with the latest armor and weapons at the endgame.
