Customization (Star Ocean 1)

Customization (カスタマイズ, Kasutamaizu?) is an Item Creation specialty from Star Ocean and its remake, Star Ocean: First Departure. It allows party members to combine weapons with minerals to create different weapons, ideally better ones. It is a risky specialty, however, as failure nets useless weapons.

Mechanics

The Customization specialty requires that a character learn the skills Aesthetic Design, Eye for Detail, and Smithing. Using the support item, Magical Rasp, increases the odds of success by 20%. The Originality talent adds another 5% to the character's odds of success. The character's skill level only adds a single percentage point per level to the odds, giving 10% at max level. Thus, without any outside influence like Music, there is always at least a 5% chance of failure even at Level 10. The success formula is the following:

Once it is determined if it has been a successful Customization, what is made is determined using the Quality ratings of the ingredient weapon and mineral. The result item formula is the following:

For a given character, only around 4% of the weapon-mineral combinations possible will give the player something specific. If making a valid combination (e.g. Luxurious Sword + Damascus), the player either obtains a failure or the true result of that combination. If not making a valid combo, the player randomly obtains a weapon from the character's "Invalid Pile" set.
