The Cathedral of Oblivion is a set of bonus challenge dungeons that appear in Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness.

The entrance pathway of the Cathedral of Oblivion

Throughout the world of Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, occasionally portals will appear that will lead the party to the Cathedral of Oblivion. Depending on how far the player is in the main story, the Cathedral will a challenge that is increasingly difficult, with 3 iterations that culminate before the game's final battle. When entering the cathedral you are presented with a message which states that if you begin the challenge, you cannot quit until it is completed. Inside the cathedral, you have the option to exit by turning back, or moving forward and beginning the challenge. If you choose the challenge, you are transported to an identical room which now contains the first group of enemies.

The Cathedral challenge consists of 3, 5, or 7 rooms of enemies, depending on which iteration of the Cathedral you are in, ending with a powerful boss in the final room. At the end of the 3rd, 5th, and 7th room there is a chest containing a reward. Even if you do not complete the 3 room or 5 room version of the Cathedral before the final 7 room version is unlocked, the chests remain and do not respawn if you complete the Cathedral challenge again. However, waiting until the final (7 room) version of the Cathedral opens up, near the end of the main story, forces you to fight the most challenging enemies the Cathedral offers for the same rewards the easier versions of the Cathedral would grant you anyway.

The 3rd iteration of the Cathedral of Oblivion offers the best weapons available to each party member in the main story of the game.

The Cathedral of Oblivion portals appear in these areas, but do not always appear each time you visit the area. To remedy this, simply entering and reentering the area will grant another chance at the portal spawning. The portal has a visible icon that appears on the map which can be seen by pressing the Options button.

  • Coast of Minoz
  • Resulian Plains
  • West of the Eastern Eiheid Mountains
  • Trei'kur
  • Northern Territory of Sohma
  • Alcazar of the Golden Age

Each of these locations, in that order, have more difficult versions of the same challenge. For example, if you enter the Cathedral at the halfway point in the game where the 2nd iteration of the Cathedral is available, then the boss at the end of the Cathedral in the Coast of Minoz will be less powerful than the boss at the end of the Northern Territory of Sohma location.
