The Calnus (カルナス, Karunasu?) is a Pangalactic Federation vessel under the command of Ronyx J. Kenny. Advanced for its time, it remained Ronyx's ship upon his promotion to admiral but with heavy modifications.

Characteristics[]

As seen in Star Ocean: First Departure, the Calnus has four floors interconnected by a circular elevator pad. The Air Lock, the exit of the Calnus, is on the first floor. On the second floor, the Break Rooms are located; crew members can study subjects—such as astrophysics—from their screens at any time.

The third floor has both the Sick Bay and Transporter Room, separated by a cargo area called the Connection Corridor (which has two motor-driven paths to come and go) and the elevator hall. The ship's Bridge is located on the fourth floor, where both science and communications officers monitor the screens and two helmsmen steer the Calnus on the captain's orders.

The ship's sensors are able to detect alien presence within the ship, such as when Fellworm eggs (unknowingly carried by Roddick Farrence and Millie Chliette) hatched. Its transporters can teleport anything up to a certain size to anywhere within a 100,000 mile radius.

Story[]

Spoilers, plot and/or ending details follow. (skip)

Fabricated at an unknown date, the Calnus came to be under the captainship of Ronyx J. Kenny. During a deep-space exploration mission, the ship stumbled upon planet Styx and its Time Gate. They determined that it was once home to an advanced civilization, but due to the danger it posed, the planet was declared strictly off-limits by the Federation.

Incident on Roak[]

In S.D. 346, Lezonia deploys a bio-weapon on the underdeveloped planet of Roak that begins turning its inhabitants to stone. The Calnus is assigned the task of examining the disease and try to find a treatment for it. As the ship's sensors indicate there are no people in the summit of Mt. Metorx, Captain Ronyx and Head Science Officer Ilia Silvestri beam down from the Calnus in order to investigate the situation. However, Roddick, Dorne and Millie arrived just in time to see their arrival.

After the two officers see that Dorne is infected by the bio-weapon, they ask if they want to cooperate in finding a cure. Warned of the Underdeveloped Planet Preservation Pact's possible consequences, the trio agrees to help. They are all transported onto the Calnus. Inside, the Fellpool youths are amazed at how advanced the ship is. They take Dorne to the sick bay. While they run tests on him, Ilia shows Roddick and Millie around the ship. After the doctor is finished analyzing Dorne, he declares he cannot do anything without a sample of the original host's blood. After the disappearance of 200,000 Fellpools, they transport back down to the surface to lay Dorne in his bed while he turns to stone. Back onboard they head to headquarters on Earth.

They are told by the Lezonian ambassador that there is nothing they can do to cure the disease, since the original host is long dead. Ronyx gets the idea to go to Styx. Ilia calls him crazy but agrees it's the only way. Along with Roddick and Millie, the two pilot the Calnus to Styx with no other crew members onboard.

Mission to Milokeenia[]

By S.D. 366, Ronyx still commands the Calnus, but now as an admiral. One of his crew members is his own son, Claude. At some point it seems to have been refitted as the bridge seems larger and has considerably more crewman operating the bridge controls. The interior has also changed.

Calnus EX

The Calnus in space.

The Calnus eventually reaches Expel and rescues Claude. However, Claude runs to the transported bay and beams back down to Expel to help his friends. At Phynal, to show his power, Gabriel destroys the Calnus, killing Ronyx and crew in the process. The antimatter cannon destroys the Calnus within 3 shots, all three at a drastically reduced power setting in comparison to their full potential.

During this the Calnus is demonstrated to have shields which are quickly overpowered by Gabriel's attacks and a cannon-like weapon which is used in Ronyx's desperate attempt to fight back. How effective this weapon would be in normal circumstances is unknown because it is only demonstrated in the Calnus's final moments, being used against a target whose lack of a definite physical form makes fighting back all but impossible.

Spoilers end here.
