A Battle Trophy, known as Battle Collection (バトルコレクション, Batoru Korekushon?) and shortened to BC in the Japanese versions, is a recurring feature in the Star Ocean series that represents an in-battle achievement that the player earns under certain conditions. By obtaining a determined number of Battle Trophies, the player will have access to multiple bonuses.
Appearances[]
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time[]
There are 300 battle trophies available, and they can only be obtained in Galaxy Mode and above. Some are specifically obtained in the Universe and 4D Modes, particularly those earned by fighting the game's superbosses. Earning a certain number of trophies unlocks alternate costumes, Music Test, Universe and 4D Modes, and Full Active Mode.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope[]
Battle trophies in the fourth installment are by far the most numerous, as they must be obtained individually with each character. The player must be in control of the character at the time it meets a trophy's condition. The rewards for earning certain amounts of trophies is the same for all characters: it unlocks extra battle voices, removes their level cap, and gives CP bonus.
Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness[]
There are only 100 trophies that can be earned. Compared to The Last Hope, they are much easier. Obtaining all battle trophies earns the player the "Consummate Combatant" trophy. The player can check their progress within the Research then Battle Trophies menus.
Trivia[]
- Battle trophies may be a successor to the Voice and Music collections from Star Ocean and Star Ocean: The Second Story.
- Star Ocean 3's Battle Trophies are one of the earliest instances of a game having a built-in Achievement System, along with the Collectible Trophies from Super Smash Bros. Melee.
- Star Ocean 3's Battle Trophy Save Data is one of the few save files from any PS2 game that actually utilizes Copy Protection that prevents players from making back-ups of it. If you were to try it, the game would refuse to load the copied Battle Trophy Data. This copy protection is nonexistent if you're playing the game on a PS2 emulator though.
