Background[]

Ashlay was born in 2076 A.D. on the planet Roak. At a young age, he mastered the Edarl blade arts, a form of swordsmanship passed down in Astral since ancient times, and became a mercenary. Having trained as a dual-wielding swordsman, he tested his prowess at the Tatroi Arena. Upon his debut, he rose to the rank of champion in the blink of an eye. On a quest to find someone stronger than himself to polish his skill with, he presumably met Edge Maverick and the rest of the SRF-003 Calnus crew as opponents, fighting to keep his title as champion.

In later years, Ashlay would meet and befriend Lias Warren, a captain of the Astral Knights. Together, they would participate in the Demonic Wars, and survive to become hailed as heroes. Eventually, during a mission from the king of Silvalant to retrieve the Mirror of Incarnation, his war comrade, Del Argosy, went insane before the Mirror and attacked several of his men, including Ashlay, who lost his left arm as a result.

War veteran[]

In S.D. 46, Roddick Farrence and Ilia Silvestri first meet Ashlay in the Tatroi Colosseum, watching the fighting from the stands. Ashlay remarks that the fighters are nothing but amateur puppets before leaving. Soon after, as Roddick and Ilia make their way to the docks, Ashlay grabs their attention. The three talk about their travels and the fact that Ashlay is one of the Heroes of the Demonic Wars. He compliments Roddick's swordsmanship before offering to join their expedition.

Making their way to the capital of Astral; Ashlay's goal to meet with Lias Warren, an old war comrade, the group encounters Phia Melle. She and Ashlay catch up, briefly, having known him as a young girl; she being Lias' foster daughter. Phia takes the group to her father's mansion where they meet him and stay the night. In Lias' office, he and Ashlay have a conversation about Cyuss Warren, his son who left the Astral Knights. During the night, Roddick, Ilia, and Ashlay awaken to the sound of fighting in the next room. As they rush in, they discover that Phia has stabbed Lias. Before they can talk to her, however, she escapes through an open window into the dark city.

Ashlay Profile

Chasing Phia through the city, the three follow her into the Astral Caves. Stalking her deep into the caves, she finally stops to confront them, only to reveal herself to be a Darthwidow in disguise; a demon world assassin. Upon killing her, the group returns to the city. Ashlay tells Roddick and Ilia to take the monster's head to the castle, to clear Phia of her crimes while he goes to check on Lias. Upon realizing that Lias' wounds are not life-threatening, Ashlay catches up to Roddick and Ilia and the three meet with the king. As a reward for stopping the attempt on Lias' life, Phia gives the group a Lunar Talisman and a Cinderella Glass before taking them to the inn.

In the inn, Ashlay tells gives Phia a bit of advice about her relationship with Cyuss. Thankful, she tells the group about the Purgatorium that houses the Eye of Truth, a mystical object that might help them find Millie Chliette and Ronyx Kenny, then takes her leave. On their way there, Ashlay has an argument with a little girl named Puffy, taking offense to her calling him old and finding her attitude toward him as a veteran, disrespectful.

Making their way to the Purgatorium, Ashlay proclaims he's never heard of a hidden door to the temple. The group looks around briefly before being surprised by Ioshua Jerand descending from the skies. Ioshua immediately recognizes Ashlay and compliments him, only to be chastised for his flattering. Despite this, the featherfolk requests the highlander's assistance in moving a large boulder to reveal the entrance to the Purgatorium's hidden entrance. Despite having only one arm, Ashlay pushes the boulder to the side, allowing all four to enter and explore.

After saving Ioshua from a monster, he tells the group that he is looking for his sister, missing since childhood. He also states that his parents were killed by the Crimson Shield, which surprises Ashlay; though he doesn't wish to speak on his surprise at the moment.

Making their way into the deepest part of the temple, the group comes upon a room filled with technology far more developed than that which Roak could accomplish, according to Ilia. Ashlay moves forward only to be thrown back by an unseen force, seconds before three magical beings known as the Runes, appear before them. Ioshua immediately asks about his missing sister, only to be told that she is not at the Purgatorium. The Runes then address Roddick and Ilia as beings from another world and tell them the people they are looking for reside in the Van Kingdom. Before anything else can be said, the Runes teleport the group outside of the Purgatorium, banishing them their sanctum. As they leave for Van, via Tropp, Ioshua requests to join the group, which Roddick can accept or decline.

While heading to the next town of Tropp, a spaceship lands outside of Kratus Village which prompts the group to investigate. Upon reaching the crash site, Ilia speculates that the "third party" has arrived.

Profile[]

Renowned for his meritorious deeds during the Demonic Wars, Ashlay's skills with the sword remain sharp as they were in his youth. He is a wise veteran who seeks to pass along his knowledge to a deserving pupil, and believes that person to be Roddick after seeing him in action in the Arena.

Gameplay[]

In Star Ocean and its remake, Ashlay is a playable character. He is a swordsmaster and shares many of his Special Arts with Roddick and Cyuss. Ashlay can teach Roddick the Wyrm King SFT in a PA in Silvalant after Durss is destroyed (Ashlay needs significant AR with Roddick, a minimum of 9, for this to happen). Ashlay is also one of three characters required to recruit Erys at the Old Race Ruins in First Departure. He is also a playable character in Star Ocean: Anamnesis.

In Star Ocean: The Last Hope, a young version of Ashlay appears as a special foe who can be fought at the Tatroi Colosseum. The player can replay the fight against Ashlay whenever they like.
