Appraising (鑑定, Kantei-zaiku?, lit. Appraisal) is a specialty from Star Ocean and its remake, Star Ocean: First Departure. Throughout the game, the player occassionally accumulates unidentified items marked with a "?". They are unusable until they are appraised via Spectacles.
The specialty requires that a character learn the skills Herbology, Item Knowledge, and Mineralogy. Using the support item, Element Analyzer, increases the odds of a successful appraisal by 20%. If the appraisal is unsuccessful, it only uses up the Spectacles (which are worth 10 Fol) whereas the unidentified item remains available for another attempt.
The success formula is the following:
- Failed to parse (syntax error): {\displaystyle (Appraising Level × 5) + 30 = Odds of Success}
