9S (９Ｓ, Nain Esu?), shortened form of YoRHa No.9 Type S (ヨルハ９号Ｓ型, YoRuHa Kyūgō S-gata?) and nicknamed "Nines", is a guest character in Star Ocean: Anamnesis.

Along with 2B, 9S is one of the two protagonists of NieR: Automata. He is an android who served during the 14th Machine War; however, while he has an attack function, he specializes in investigative purposes. He is in charge of 2B's maintenance, being her partner in her missions on Earth.

• The S in his full name ('YoRHa No. 9 Type S') stands for "Scanner". His shortened name ('9S') is a Latin pun: "non esse" is "not to be," the opposite of 2B's "to be." It could also be read as the German "nein es" ("no id") referring to Freud's theory of id, ego and superego.
